How to Waterproof Your Leather Bag: A Simple Guide

Rain is leather's worst enemy. One bad storm and your beautiful bag can warp, stain, or crack. The good news? Waterproofing your leather bag takes 10 minutes and costs almost nothing.

Here's exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Clean the leather first

Never waterproof a dirty bag. Use a soft damp cloth to remove dust and surface dirt. Let it dry completely before moving on — at least 30 minutes.

Step 2: Choose the right product

Beeswax-based products are the gold standard for leather. They condition and protect at the same time. Avoid silicone sprays — they can clog the leather's pores and cause long-term damage.

Step 3: Apply evenly

Use a soft cloth and work the product into the leather in circular motions. Don't rush. Pay extra attention to seams and corners — that's where water sneaks in first.

Step 4: Let it absorb

Give it at least an hour before using the bag. Overnight is even better. You'll notice the leather looks slightly darker at first — that's normal and fades as it dries.

How often should you do this?

Every 3-6 months for daily use bags. More often if you live in a rainy climate or use your bag heavily.

One last tip

If you get caught in the rain, don't panic. Wipe the bag dry immediately with a soft cloth and let it air dry naturally. Never use a hairdryer — heat cracks leather fast.
